3 Ways To Be Relatable For Your Team

Your team will have a hard time relating to you if they never get to know you on a personal level.

A large gap between knowing you as their leader and knowing you personally can create resentment and disconnect within your team. Remaining distant can make simple communication difficult and even slow the growth of your business.

As a relatable leader, you can inspire great work. It is possible to deeply connect with your team and clients, becoming someone they are drawn to naturally. While being relatable may seem like something you are either born with or not, it is a skill that you can develop and strengthen. (And a skill I believe every leader should possess.)

Here are a few ways you can better relate to your team:

Stay authentic. When you are true to yourself, you will become more relatable. Others will be able to connect with you based on similar interests, goals, and convictions. Remain professional, but let your personality shine!

See value. As John Maxwell says, “Every person you encounter has intrinsic value, which means they should be appreciated for who they are….if you’ll appreciate people and their impact on your life, you’ll discover that they relate to you a lot better.*” Strive to see the value in everyone you encounter.

Provide value. Your responsibility as a leader is to add value to your team, clients, and everyone around you. Whether it’s a kind word or a generous act, stay aware of how you can provide value to others. Encourage and help others out of a genuine desire to help.

How do you connect with and relate to your team? I can’t wait to hear your ideas!
