Do you have a Cowboy Code?

James Owen, author of Cowboy Ethics, What It Takes to Win at Life, says “Cowboys are role models because they live by a code.”

They show us what it means to stand for something and to strive every day to make your actions line up with your beliefs. Do you have a cowboy code?

No one else is watching how you run your business. How are you going to make yourself do the hard things? What will motivate you to persevere through struggles? What rules will you operate your business by?

I was intrigued to learn about the concept of Cowboy Ethics and wanted to know if this code would apply to me and my life as an Entrepreneur. Here is an example of the cowboy code:

1. Live each day with courage

2. Take pride in your work

3. Always finish what you start

4. Do what has to be done

5. Be tough, but fair

6. When you make a promise, keep it

7. Ride for the brand

8. Talk less and say more

9. Remember that some things aren’t for sale

10. Know where to draw the line

When you stop and think about it, entrepreneurs and cowboys have a lot in common. They both work alone and are leaders in their business. Since they are at the top, they don’t have anyone above them holding them accountable. Many aspects of this code can be directly applicable to business leaders and entrepreneurs alike.

With COVID, it’s been easy to get lax inside of your business because everyone is waiting for it to end. Message after message is being shared to be gentle with yourself and slow down. But is that good for your business? Are you intentionally slowing down for the right reasons? Or are you “slowing down” as an excuse to stay inside of your comfort zone?

Perhaps it’s time that you take code #4 to heart and create your own set of cowboy ethics. I know that I am! 🤠
